In 1911 census they are five doors down: 26 Dene Row, Bates Cottages, Seaton Delaval

This was all recorded by the family on the 1911 census, and shows all the children as born in Bates Cottages, which is still the name for those houses in Holywell. However, this census was probably not written by George, as we know he could not read or write. When he joined the pit and the Northumberland and Durham Miners' Permanent Relief Fund they recorded his name as 'GOUTS', which is what had been put on his marriage certificate where he made his mark. This error did not come to light until 1921 when he wanted to draw his pension from them. They had to apply to the Registrar in Norfolk for a Birth certificate, which they wrote up on the back of the application form. George clearly wasn't aware or able to spell his name.

So in 1911:

George the father was a 'Stone miner', more commonly known as a Stoneman, who would bring down stone in the mine while the roadways were being excavated, and they would build stone packs to act as supports to the walls.

His son James Atkinson was an ‘Onsetter’,  the man who puts the full tubs in and the empty tubs out of the cage at the shaft bottom or at any other landing or stopping place.

James's brother George Willie was a ‘Hewer’ who worked the coal face. He would undercut the coal using a pick, often drill holes and blast the coal with explosive and fill the tub with the coal which dropped after the explosion. (Thanks to Woodhorn Mining Museum for the terminology)

Then on 9 Nov 1914 the 22 Tyneside and Scottish Regiment was formed, and at full strength within two weeks. James A must have signed up at Cramlington at the beginning. And that’s when his life changed…
